Mid-July e-News

Northwest Canoe got its start teaching cedar strip canoe building. So it's just common sense for us to stock the paddling gear our customers use. Visit our shop in the Historic Northern Railway Warehouse, Lowertwon, St. Paul, or browse the NWC Store on the web.

We're your un-mega paddlesports shop; we do not compete for your new canoe and kayak business. We're not even in the used boat business: we don't want to buy your broken forgotten neglected craft. Donate it to a summer camp, post it on Craig's List....

Now that you're familiar with our un-sales pitch regarding boats, please allow us a moment to fill you in on a few boats that have fallen into our hands through unique situations and our thriving repair shop, un-ordinary canoes that you may not be able to purchase elsewhere. Call 651 229 0192 or email info@northwestcanoe.com if you're interested in the ...

Peterborough 16

The red epoxy finish, upswept sheer line and symmetrical ends combine for a classic look on this cedar strip Peterborough 16. With its 31-inch beam, narrower than many tandems, and a bit of rocker the design feels lively and maneuverable on the water. It's no surprise cottagers favored the Peterborough 16 during the golden age of canoeing. Al Gustaveson, the building master that started NorthWest Canoe, made this Peterborough for a boat show. It's never been paddled. You can show this hand-made canoe the water for $1,900.

Kayak Skid Strip

When the wind kicks up and getting off the water translates to chasing a wave up a cobble beach, it wears on your nerves and your boat. Gel coat along the keel line of your kayak starts looking thin and chipped. Exposed fabric can lead to leaks and delaminations.

Bring your kayak to NorthWest Canoe and ask us to install a silicon-carbide keel protector strip. The black epoxy based topcoat looks sharp and will increase the life expectancy of your touring kayak.

Please call ahead, 651 229 0192. We typically have your kayak back to you in 3-5 days and the cost is only $90 materials and labor.

New Canoe Design

The NorthWest Passage Solo comes off the forms this week. This fifteen foot touring design will make its first on-water appearance at the Mississippi River Challenge. Plans for this exciting new solo will be available through the NWC Store after the event.

If you've been a Merlin fan, but always wished for a touch of rocker, look no further. The asymetrical shallow arch design of the NorthWest Passage Solo gives you two inches of bow rocker and an inch of stern rocker. Differential rocker provides manoeuvrability in heavy water, yet great tracking when you lay the hull flat.

If you're ready to build a solo canoe, but don't have the time or space for a stable-full of boats, the NorthWest Passage Solo is the one canoe that will see you down the creek or take you on that week long portage and paddle excursion.

Rob Roy 15

Have you read the threads on the paddling forums? Nines and tens dominate when it comes to the Bell Rob Roy. Some paddlers consider the Rob Roy a stable all-weather solo tripping canoe, others see it as comfortable roomy kayak, the perfect craft for fishing, photography or taking wiggle-pup out for the afternoon. However you envision it, the Rob Roy will perform to your expectations. This 35-pound Kevlar Rob Roy has one season of light use. Paddle it like it's yours for $1900.

Third-Tri

Mississippi Bob Brown designed the Third-Tri as his personal triathalon canoe. It was Bobs third and best performance solo crusier. Third-Tri meets the USCA C1 spec if you're hankering to win a canoe race. The V-shaped hull offers incredible stability. Third-Tri goes where you think it ought to with a slight hull lean. No need for steraing strokes just keep your forward stroke on. This canoe boasts a comfortable slider seat and adjustble foot brace. Third-Tri will make a great solo crusier for a quick and light trip to the BWCA. Own this one-of-a-kind canoe for $700.
